Aging Populations & Theory.

Course and Program objectives: CO1: Examine the impact of race, gender, and social class on individuals as they age. CO2: Deconstruct stereotypes about the elderly in society. CO3: Evaluate sociological theories and research on aging. PO1: Differentiate major paradigms, classic, and contemporary theories that inform the study of sociology. PO2: Analyze social behavior using a sociological imagination. PO3: Identify how social stratification influences social inequality. PO5: Evaluate appropriate ethical considerations, methodological approaches and analysis techniques for sociological research. Essay instructions: 1. Write an introduction for your paper. Within the introduction, you want to be sure to include a thesis statement. 2. Citing our course material, describe the importance of understanding social theories of aging. What can we learn about the role of gender, race, class, sexual orientation, functional ability, and the meaning of the aging experience through the use of aging theories? Please be sure to include the various theories.

3. Explain the key points of age stratification theory and how age stratification may lead to ageism. 4. Describe two myths related to aging, and how ageism perpetuates these myths. Next, break down these myths using factual information from the course readings on physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Write a concluding paragraph which connects back to your introduction and sums up the main points of your essay. (No new information is added to the conclusion). Include a reference page titled references. It should be in APA format and in alphabetical order. Keep in mind, a reference cannot go on the reference page if does not match to an in-text citation within the essay. Use the textbook and at least two journal articles (not from the course and no more than five years old) to help you support your perspective. Remember to include proper APA in-text citations to give credit to your sources. Essay format: 1. The paper should be typed, double-spaced, 1” margins, times new roman 12 pt. font, and saved as a .doc, in the format: Lastname_SOCI307_Assignment One 2. The essay should include an APA title page and reference page (does not count toward the page length requirements).
