Assessment 2: country case-study

For this assessment you are required to put together a case-study on South Africa. The assessment is made up of two parts.

Word limit: 1500 words (include clear sub-headings and paragraph spacing), 1.5 spacing, font size 11. References within the text are included in the specified word count but the reference list, which you should provide at the end of this piece of work, is not part of the count. You must state the word count at the end of your work. The assessment must be submitted into Blackboard.

Part 1: The Political system of Apartheid
Write one page/500 words on the apartheid era of South Africa’s history.
You should consider the legal basis of apartheid, the social impact on different population groups, and the fall of apartheid and rise of the ANC.
Sources: you are expected to draw on two texts for part one. One should be a book chapter OR journal article, and one should be an online resource (for instance, a report from a recognized national or international organization). As a rule, you should aim to choose your online article with academic rigor in mind.

Part 2: Issue focus
Write two pages/1 000 words (see notes in part 1 on information such as font size) on: one issue, a key figure/s of significance to your case-study, one topic, one important event, or a relevant film or visual representations of the country in the form of art or artefacts. Your chosen focus should demonstrate your knowledge and critical understanding of the country case-study.  Therefore, you should aim to engage critically with your chosen focus, moving your work beyond the level of description.
