Critical analysis and evaluation of 2 case studies

Critical evaluation does not only include negative aspects, however, it should include both negative and positive aspects; strengths and weaknesses – in other words provide an unbiased evaluation of a case study / project / etc. This task invites you to undertake a comprehensive critical analysis and evaluation of 2 case studies related to your design project brief: high density affordable housing. Research and investigations should be used to support your work. This will be submitted in the format of a section within your design project report (using your InDesign A3 template but submitted as a pdf file). Your critical analysis and evaluation should study the architect’s sustainable design approach, acknowledged socio-cultural, economic and environmental features of the case study, innovative construction materials and/or structural systems, etc. You will be expected to communicate the following aspects (as applicable) in each of your case study evaluation:  Project context  Building design  Environmental attributes and environmental strategies  Building structure  Building technology You are strongly advised to choose accessible case studies within London or the area which you live in so as to visit the case study and capture your own photos. You should also ensure there is sufficient information available (concerning floor plans, sections, sustainability strategy, structure, materials, etc.). Report Structure of this section: Introduction: What issues/topics are you going to explore? What will be your focus? What will your report show? Main body: Critical Analysis and Evaluation of both case studies Case study 1:

1. Project context: Location, size, brief, architect, completion date, etc. 2. Building design: Include building plans, sections and elevations of the building. Include annotated photos and sketches of unique features in the building. 3. Environmental attributes and environmental strategies: Explain the environmental attributes of the building (BREEAM / LEED / other rating) and why it has achieved this. 4. Building structure: Describe how the building structure works. Illustrate primary and secondary structures by using diagrams/technical drawings. Include annotated photos and sketches of unique features in the building. 5. Building technology: Investigate and describe materials and technologies employed in the building. Include annotated photos and sketches of unique features in the building.
