CITIES AT RISK.

 City Research Paper Assignment Description: During the course of the semester you will each write a research paper (min 2500 words, not counting bibliography) on a city of your choice either in a developed or developing nation (Lake Worth, Florida, USA). Your final research paper should be a comprehensive description of the history of the city , vulnerable conditions, disaster events, identify lessons learned, evaluate the effectiveness of all government led actions and comparison of their approach compared to EM general recommendations. Use a variety of sources (Minimum 5 sources). Content (all should be included in paper): 1. History of the city: Description of the location, map of the location of the city and the city today, founder, why was it founded there? Relevant historical moments for the city. 2. Importance of the city: economic assets, social assets and cultural assets. Importance in the context of the country but also in the region and the world, if its a big city. Description of the growth of the city, demographic analysis of the current population in the city. 3. Disaster vulnerability: Hazards affecting the city, disaster events on record, vulnerability analysis (identify the cities’ social, economic, physical and environmental vulnerability) See Coppola reading attached to week 7 and 12 and create BOTH a table and general discussion on the vulnerability of the city based on your analysis. 4. Resilience: Identify the city’s protective actions or projects to deal with disaster risk. Minimum 3 projects or protective measures/policies/laws to deal with disaster risk. 5. Propose solutions: Based on the existing projects, identify the gaps in their protective actions and propose necessary policies, regulations and projects that could increase disaster resilience in this city. Assignment Specifications: Times New Roman, Font Size 12, Single space. 1 Inch margins. • Cite in text using the APA guides provided on the course library. Citing in text means to paraphrase and credit your source (i.e Brown, 2012). Always, always cite the source of your information. • No direct quotes at all. Paraphrase and credit your source with APA in text citations i.e (Brown, 2018) • Use a variety of sources (Minimum 5 sources). Include bibliography at the end in APA style as well. Does not count towards word count. • Include a title page. • NO ABSTRACT or introduction needed. • Organize paper by the sections described above (number 1-5), one section per topic/number. Give each section a name appropriate for the content. • Pictures and graphs are encouraged. Provide source and a short description for each, underneath. • Spell-check and re-read your responses. Grammar and sentence structure is part of your grade. Quality writing is a skill at all academic levels.
