1. Takaki introduces us to six general groups-African Americans, Asian Americans, Chicanos, the Irish, American Indians, and Jewish Americans. Compare and contrast two or more of these ethnic groups’ experience in being ethnically American based on what we have read in class so far. Why are the different experiences important to recognize and understand for minority-majority group relations? How can you connect it to our society today? To your experiences in being ethnically American? 2. Cultural prejudice, according to Martinez in Seeing More than Black and White, is a common form of discrimination for groups of people whose experience is outside the bi-polar black-white perspective on race relations. Utilizing what you have learned in class and using Martinez’ meaning of “the color of culture,” compare and contrast at least two ethnic groups that experience this idea of “the color of culture.” How do those groups experience it? How are their experiences similar and different? Why are the different experiences important to recognize and understand for minority-majority and minority-minority group relations? How can you connect it to our society today? To your experiences in being “otherized”/marginalized because of your culture?
