Does Any Kind of Censorship Kill Art?

The clash between art and censorship continues to create controversy all over the world. It seems that some artists have taken the artistic issue quite far, and thus they need to be censored. However, some people believe that artists need to push their personal vision and limit in order to come up with exceptional artwork. There are claims that censorship kills art since it affects the individuals who want to develop their artistic expressions.

Art can be subjected to censorship, and people cannot easily realize that this is taking place. However, I believe that not all art should be censored since it affects artists in many ways. Some art has suffered from attacks, funds have been withdrawn, and in some instances, it has been removed from museums. Examples of such art include the Velazquez Rokeby Venus that was in the London National Gallery and the Piss Christ by Andres Serrano. They are famous examples of how censorship has the ability of killing art. Such forms of art should not be censored since they show an individual’s artistic expression. However, if the art provokes or undermines certain beliefs such as those, which are religious based, then censorship should take place.

Art can also be censored in situations such as when a parent dictates the programs that their children can watch. The parents believe that they have the best judgment concerning issues that affect their children. It is no wonder that many rating systems that range from warnings in video games, television programs, and movies, among others exist. It seems that artistic expression will be restricted based on profane language, violence, sexuality and even mature themes. In such situations, censorship is recommended since it will affect certain individuals from being morally corrupted. Therefore, I do not believe that censorship kills art, but rather it ensures that individuals to do not come up with provocative art that undermines certain beliefs and values.
