Five Forces Industry Analysis.
Porter (2001) argues that the Internet does not change the model; it is only a tool to be used in seeking competitive advantage. In his words, “The Internet per se will rarely be a competitive advantage. Many of the companies that succeed will be the ones that use the Internet as a complement to traditional ways of competing, not those that set their Internet initiatives apart from their established operations” (p. 64). Company: Samsung • Consider how the Internet has affected the five forces in your company’s (or one with which you are familiar) industry. • What are some of the ways that the Internet influences your competition? • Study your company’s website and that of a competitor. Find some additional information about the competition between the companies. Analyze the defense strategy of each using Porter’s model. • Do you agree or disagree with Porter’s contention that the Internet does not change the model. Why?
