15% O.W.L (Due October 21) • Students are required to compare an Executive Department of the United States government to a Department in the Ministry of Magic. A list of known Ministry offices and Cabinet-level departments is available on Blackboard. Students should look beyond the Cabinet-level and investigate some sub-agencies within a department. For example, 1 a student might compare the Federal Transit Administration within the Department of Transportation with the Floo Network Authority. Clearly, the bulk of the O.W.L. will focus on the Muggle agency, but try to cull the books for various mentions of the Ministry agency you choose. • The comparison may be presented in memo-style; a traditional essay is not necessary. • Comparisons should run 2-5 single spaced pages. Include information about the agency’s founding, who currently leads the organization, how the agency fits into the larger department, the agency’s budget, number of employees, major activities, and other pertinent information. Also provide as much information at possible about the Ministry office, including its appearance in the books. • All information that is not original work of the student must be cited using Turabian/Chicago Style. Both in-text citations (or footnotes) and a bibliography at the end of the comparison are needed. The Harry Potter books must be cited in the text, but they do not need to appear in the bibliography.
