How we know what we know – Fake News.

Select a newspaper, magazine that you have never accessed before. Write a 250 minimum to 400 word maximum (10 words over/under allowed) essay critical answering the questions below. Provide a link to the story you have chosen to analyze (create and upload a pdf of the story if you decide to use a hard copy news source). Be sure to provide supporting evidence – site sources of information. For example, if you did online research on the journalist, provide the source of your information. A. Analysis of Newsworthiness Do you think the story contains enough newsworthy elements to warrant its presentation as news? If so, which criteria were most influential in your decision? If not, what is missing? That is, what did the story need to exhibit more of in order for you to consider it newsworthy? B. Analysis by Type of Sender What can you find out about the person who wrote the story? Is this person a professional journalist? What is his/her education and experience? What can you find out about the news organization? What is the news organization’s reputation in the journalistic community and among audiences? C. Analysis by the intention of the sender Do you sense the story to be more informative or persuasive? What elements in the story led you to this conclusion? D. Analysis by accuracy Do you judge any of the facts in the story as appearing to be inaccurate? If so, why do you think they are inaccurate? If not, why do you feel all the facts are accurate? Do you judge the overall story to be accurate? Provide supporting evidence for your essay. Your evidence can come from your text or any other academic source. Use APA citations for your sources.
