The purpose of this assignment is to get you started at looking at texts in detail, and being able to unpack how you know what you know; that is, what it is that you are using to inform your interpretation and understanding of something. Read the attached text and think about the following: • What can you tell me about this text? What is its purpose? What is going on? Where did it come from? • Who is the intended audience? What are their (assumed) characteristics? • What is the style of the language used? • What don’t you know about the text? Is there background information that you would like to know to inform your understanding of the text? • What are some initial ideas you have for how to approach analysing this text? What kind of analytic uncertainties come up for you? When thinking about these questions, consider how you know, i.e., what in the text informs your answer. Some things might be explicit, some might be more implicit. Then, pick three aspects of the text that stand out to you and discuss why.
