Description
One story which is making news headlines during November and December 2018. Both tasks are to be done individually – ie working by yourself.
Between weeks 8 and 11 of semester 1, you will keep up to date with a story in the news which has ‘longevity’ – in other words, a story which will continue for some time. You will read about the story in newspapers, on-line, listen to reports on TV and other media, building up a detailed knowledge of the story and how it is developing.
Task 1: The Journal
This task carries 50% of the grade for this assessment
Follow a news story of your choice and agreed with your teacher for a period of four weeks, between weeks 8 and 11 of semester 1. For each of the four weeks keep a journal in which you outline how the story is developing and why. You should write one journal entry each week of between 150-200 words and you should accompany each entry with a reference list covering the media you have read and listened to in your research into the story. In order to gain a full and objective overview of the story, use a variety of sources, so that you are able to see how different media outlets deal with it.
Marking Criteria:
In marking your work, we will be looking for evidence of the following…
• Accuracy in your use of English, including grammar, vocabulary and consistency of style
• Depth of understanding of the subject and how it develops during the weeks you follow it
• The structure of your journal entries
