HUS3RPL 2019 Research for Professional Life: Shaping Your Future Assessment 3: INDEPENDENT RESEARCH PORTFOLIO Worth: 60% of total assessment Length: 2,500 words Submission: Online via LMS Due: 11:55pm, Monday 28th October 2019 Overview In this 2,500 word curated research portfolio, you will professionally record and present your final research project. This is where all your hard work this semester will pay off! In this portfolio you are to present your fully-developed project and demonstrate your ability to apply the research skills you have acquired throughout the course. Due to the diversity of each project, this portfolio could take many forms but in most cases will be presented as a critically informed and evidence based research paper. Presentation As this is a self-curated portfolio, there are no formal rules for how you organise your research. However, there are a few things to remember when considering how best to present your work. Your portfolio needs to be professionally presented, logically structured with a clear introduction and conclusion, it should also include a title page – with a title which tells the reader specifically what your research paper is about (see The Craft of Research, Booth, Colomb & Williams 3rd ed., p. 248) – and a reference list at the end. You can include sub-headings if you wish. Visual evidence, data and images may also be included (either in the main text or in an appendix) but must be fully referenced. Research Requirement You need to explicitly use at least 10 scholarly or reputable sources in your research paper. Scholarly sources are peer-reviewed articles in academic journals, book chapters, and books. Other acceptable sources may include published reports generated from reputable bodies or government publications. Newspaper articles, audio-visual materials, websites, blogs and other media items may also be used in addition to the above (if appropriate) but will not count towards meeting the minimum research requirement. Referencing • You can use either Harvard (in-text) or Oxford (footnotes) referencing styles. These are modelled in the La Trobe Library Academic Referencing Tool at: http://www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/referencing-tool/ • You must include a reference list at the end of your portfolio. Your reference list should include all of the materials you have explicitly referenced in your work. Any material that is not explicitly used in the course of your research papershould not be included in the reference list. Note that the reference list is not included in the word count. Submission • Your research portfolio will be submitted online via Turnitin (unless other arrangements have been made) and therefore should be prepared accordingly. It is recommended that you submit your work in .doc or .docx format. • Use A4 size pages and a clear, simple, legible black font – either 11 or 12 point. • Double-space the text. • Include a cover title page with your name, student number and assessment title. • Include page numbers throughout. • Your research paper must be submitted electronically via the ‘Independent Research Portfolio Submission Link’ which will be located under the Assessment 3: Independent Research Portfolio label in the Assessment block on the HUS3RPL LMS site. Late Penalties and Extensions • Work submitted late will incur a 5% penalty per working day. Any assignment submitted more than five working days after the due date (without an extension) cannot be accepted for marking. • Extensions may be sought through your tutor. Applications for extension need to be submitted at least three days prior to the due date. This can be done via email. • Extensions may be granted for adverse, unplanned circumstances such as illness. Documentation will be required to support an application for an extension. • Extensions cannot be granted on the basis that multiple assessments are due on the same day, or your external workload is too great. Assessment Criteria Your independent research portfolio will be assessed according to the following criteria: − Research Project: your final project, including the research topic and central claim, is clearly defined and well developed. − Argument: your research paper demonstrates critical thinking with a logical, coherent, sustained and well-supported (evidence based) argument. − Originality: your research project is original, demonstrates original thinking or an original approach to the research topic. − Research Requirement: you have explicitly drawn upon and critically engaged with at least 10 appropriate sources. − Clarity of writing: your paper is clear and cohesive, communicated in an accessible way and well written with attention to proper expression and grammar. − Presentation: meets presentations standards, is well structured and appropriately referenced using either Harvard or Oxford referencing styles.
