Journal 3: Kindred’s “The Fall” Instructions: Choose ONE of the following prompts to answer in 250+ words. (Notice that questions 1 and 2 each have two parts to write about). Literary terms you may need to understand: Paradox A statement that initially appears to be contradictory, but then, on closer inspection, turns out to make sense. Foreshadowing The use in a literary work of clues to indicate or suggest events that have not yet occurred. Irony A contrast between expectation and reality—between what is said and what is really meant, between what is expected to happen and what really does happen, or between what appears to be true and what is really true. 1. Compare and contrast Dana’s job as a blue-collar temporary worker in Los Angeles with her work as a slave on the Weyland plantation. Explain the role that reading and writing play in Dana’s work and life in both places. 2. “I never realized how easily people could be trained to accept slavery,” says Dana to Kevin (Butler 101). Discuss at least three situations or methods that train people to accept oppression in the antebellum South. Do these three situations to oppress people still exist in America in the 21st Century? Please explain with specific examples and link to an online piece or pieces on the subject in modern times. 3. Tom Weylin believes Dana is trouble. In what ways is Dana dangerous to the way of life in the Weylin household? How is Dana being dangerous an example of irony? (Maybe even paradox?) 4. How is the following quote ironic and why is it significant to the plot’s development? “‘People don’t learn everything about the times that came before them,’ [Dana] said. Why should they?” (63). 5. Foreshadowing is used extensively in “The Fall”; how will “The Fall” end? What are the clues (you may paraphrase, but include page numbers)? Continue to analyze the narrative structure; what is the effect of the structure on the characters, and thus the readers? 6. How does Sarah’s situation represent one of the many paradoxes that exists in slavery? (76). in Case if some materials are needed for this assignment i will be more than happy to provide them.
