Analysis
Analyse and compare Extract 1 in terms of cohesion. Identify inter-clausal and inter-sentential cohesive ties (reference, ellipsis, substitution, conjunction and lexical items) and the use of signalling nouns.
Reflection
Choose a short paragraph from your own trial assignment (or another MA assignment you have submitted for assessment, via Turnitin). Reproduce this extract in an appendix to your assignment. Write a personal reflection on how you have used cohesive ties in this text, the lexical and grammatical choices you have made in an attempt to achieve cohesion, and the appropriacy of these choices.

Write a final paragraph or two providing advice for teachers who want to help their students write more cohesive academic texts. In your discussion, make reference to the findings from your analysis of all three extracts
