Masculinity in Chains.
Consider the title of this play and its possible symbolic meaning. Then think about all of the characters – both men and women – in the play to whom the title might refer. Consider the degrees to which they all in some respect reflect upon the play’s symbolic title. Then choose one of the male characters and discuss how his story reflects upon the title. In your essay (850 words approximately) consider how your chosen male character exemplifies the experience of men in the society of that era which is undergoing great change with respect to gender tensions and expectations. What are the pressures and expectations experienced by him? Are they greater than those experienced by other male characters? How does he respond to these pressures and expectations? Is he portrayed sympathetically, or not? What insight do we gain from his story?
