Select one scene from a film we have watched during our Monday screening period. Give a formal analysis (description) of mise-en-scene, framing, cinematography, and editing. While you should offer some explanation of each of these categories, you should not hesitate to focus on one particular category if you find it more important. After this general description, select one shot in the scene that you find especially interesting. Describe that shot formally in the context of the larger scene. Offer an explanation (theory) of what that shot achieves in the context of the scene, using supporting evidence from your formal analysis. Remember these general rules about film writing. When mentioning a scene, be sure to describe the scene in the context of the film and its story so that the reader understands where in the film s/he might find it. If you like, use a footnote with timecode, but remember that this is not usually done in film writing. Be sure to mention the director/ year of production either in your text or within parentheses.
