Based on the case study of Being Apple: Steve Jobs (found on Blackboard) critically discuss the following question: The way Steve Jobs used power and influence has been characterised by many as transformational leadership inspiring and motivating employees to realise his vision. However, many others argue that he was a toxic leader highlighting the negative and destructive potential of his actions. To what extent would you argue that Steve Jobs is either a transformational or toxic leader? In your analysis draw on the literature on power & politics and leadership to critically analyse Steve Jobs’ leadership style and the power relations experienced within Apple under Jobs’ leadership. • You are not expected to do any extra research into Apple and/ or Steve Jobs. You can base your assignment solely on the information provided in the case and achieve a good mark. • You are expected to build on the knowledge of Understanding and Organization of People topics outlined above. It is essential that you work with relevant theories around power & politics and leadership to support your analysis of Steve Jobs’ practices. • Support theories with detailed evidence of why and how these apply to the examples from the case study. • Build a balanced argument that does not represent the leader as only good or as only bad. Remember there are always two sides to any story. • Do not spend your word count ‘describing’ theories or ‘describing’ in too much detail the examples from the case study. Description should be kept to a minimum the emphasis should be on discussion, analysis and building an argument. • Use the full word count to maximise your marks. • Do use Harvard Referencing. Example first mention the theory with reference and citation and then give example from case study given .Case study can be quoted without citation by just mentioning it was case study. Example of theories include “narssistic leadership” ,”unitarism” “Transformational leader ” “Strong vision” etc.
