Choose any controversial issue that we have covered or will cover in class, and write a short, argumentative essay (1,200 +/- 100 words) about it. In this essay, you should carefully explain BOTH your own opinion AND the argument against your opinion. Pay special attention to articulating clearly and as persuasively as possible why someone else might reasonably disagree with you. At least one full paragraph out of your total of three should be devoted to making the best case you can for your opponents’ viewpoint.Begin by reading the treatment of your topic in the textbook or the reading in question. Your essay should reflect familiarity with these arguments. Brief quotation is encouraged. You need only cite it with a page number in parentheses. E.g.: As the textbook explains the view of proponents of strict gun control, “The Second Amendment…simply forbids the national government from disarming the local militias” (147). Do not include extensive or block quotations, however. This is about your own articulation of the arguments.Please use 12 point Times New Roman Font, with one inch margins, and double space your essay. No other sources are required. If you would like to cite another source, please do so in a footnote using Chicago formatting. Be careful to follow in detail the formatting instructions given in class and on this handout.
