PART I: Novel entitled “Out of My Mind” by Sharon Draper 1. Introduction. Begin with topic sentence and supporting details. 2. Content Area/ Setting. Content Area—a) Select and describe a content area then choose a novel as the main ILU text. This book must be a minimum of 100 pages long and at grade level 6 or HIGHER. Explain why the novel is a good fit for the unit. Give an explanation for range of grade level(s) and based on Fry readability tell why your novel is appropriate for the identified grade level(s). b) Develop a text set by adding 4 or more text types (i.e., informational text—history/social studies, science, and technical text, stories, dramas, poetry) to your unit. See CCSS “Range of Text Types for 6-12” for additional information. Setting—Describe the school setting. Then describe the classroom setting. This could be your classroom, or another classroom you will work with. Alternately, you might identify a hypothetical educational setting. Gathering data for describing the setting may involve interest surveys and/or other methods of obtaining demographic information regarding the population to be served, reading abilities, cultural and linguistic backgrounds and/or other data. 3. Rationale for unit. Review refereed publications, reports and videos. What does the research on integrating literacy in the content area say? Of the research you’ve read, what practices, programs and theories inform your unit? Compose a summary of your research and create an argument for the aspects you include in your unit.
