Review on The Dark Knight Returns l
Email from the professor: Begin with a brief introduction to your graphic novel: it’s title, the Illustrator’s name, and the basic plot situation. This should include major plot points. 1) indicate the 10 to 15 frames you’ll be discussing, 2) brief lead-in background information to the activity of those pages, and then, 3) a full, descriptive examination of how the sequence works. 4) Very Important: Your choice of pages, should represent a whole action -that is, an activity that has a beginning and a conclusion or culmination. 5) You should conclude your paper with a discussion of how or what your sequence contributes to the full narrative. Use your own words. Avoid academic phrasing and art-critical terminology, and try to describe everything clearly. Avoid generic or conversational shorthand: if someone looks sad, or happy, describe their features, gestures and expressions in close detail. Don’t write that they look sad. Write as if you were trying to make the imagery visibly clear and detailed to someone who could not see it. Write for visual clarity. Include the images and page numbers of the scene you’re discussing. Suggestion: 1 paragraph narrative background(introduction of the book, name of the book, artist), state how many pages there are, how many frames, talk about the scene (what’s happening) 2-3 pages The layout of the page, rough dimensions of the page, overall look Describe each frame(very detailed: body gesture, what does the body looks like, how is the character placed, describe how the characters face looks like, what is the drawing’s style, what is the background, how is the character positioned in a frame, try to describe every figure in the image. Background and foreground, what is the action of the figure, the design of the pattern of stuff, talk about the stylistic of the painting. the weight of the frame, what is the point of view, how deep is the image, where are things placed.) Word balloons are important.
