You support Peter at his job. Peter is 30 years old and since high school has spent his weekdays at his job in a sheltered workshop. Peter is a very competent and hard-working man though his lack of speech often leads others to underestimate his abilities. At the workshop, Peter has jobs that he is very good at and that many of the other workers are not able to do. He will work hard at those, but angrily refuse to work if given other tasks he does not like. If told he must do the job, he will shout, try to leave the shop floor or hit and push the staff. Peter also often becomes very upset with other workers if they are not doing their jobs properly or are not working as hard as he is. When this happens, he yells and calls the other workers names. The altercations often become physical and on at least one occasion, a staff member was hurt while trying to intervene. If reprimanded for his difficult behaviour, Peter demands to go home. This creates a lot of stress for his parents who must take time off work to pick him up and then stay home with him. Peter’s family and the staff have agreed that Peter requires some additional support during the day to hopefully prevent some of this behaviour and make Peter’s days go more smoothly. If the incidents do not decrease over the next few weeks, the workshop will ask Peter to stop attending.
- Assess the risk of each behaviour occurring and provide a strategy for managingthe risk. You may use the example charts used in class as a guideline o What strategies will you use to prevent Peter’s challenging behaviour? Provide a concrete example of each of the following:
o Creating rules
o Using modeling
o Providing physical guidance
o modifying the environment.
- You are not likely to eliminate Peter’s behaviour immediately. How will you deescalate Peter’s behaviour if he starts to become upset at work?
