“Students’ Experiences of Social Media ” or “Introducing Teleworking into the Patent Office”

“Students’ Experiences of Social Media ” or “Introducing Teleworking into the Patent Office”.

The report draws on and develops work begun during the workshops on Attitudes (related to Attitudes lecture), Social Media (related to Communications lecture) and Teleworking (related to Job Design lecture). Based on your reading for the lectures and the related workshops (see Lecture/Workshop Handbook), we do some practical group work in the class which allows you to learn more about the everyday work a practising HR/OB professional may do in relation to the lecture topics. This practical in-class work forms the basis for further independent work outside the class, which includes collecting real world data. You then write up this independent work as your coursework report. You only have to write up ONE of the workshops. You can choose to write a report on: EITHER 1 Measuring Attitudes: Commitment to RHUL OR 2 Students’ Experiences of Social Media OR 3 Introducing Teleworking into the Patent Office NB Your report should be an individual piece of work NOT a group piece of work. The readings associated with the relevant lectures and the workshops will help you in preparing the assessed work. However, you should aim to read beyond these, by searching in library databases for additional relevant and up-to-date work. Additional relevant high quality reading attracts additional marks! Please note, use commentaries and unpublished work on the Internet sparingly: be aware of the quality of the sources you draw on. 2 Measuring Attitudes In Workshop As described in the Lecture/Workshop Handbook, in this workshop we are examining different ways we might measure the work attitude of ‘organizational commitment’. We will be designing data collection methods (scale measurement or visual images), considering their strengths and weaknesses, reflecting on suitable samples and thinking about ways we might analyse the data. You will receive formative feedback on the designs you produce in class which will inform your further development and implementation of the methods outside of class. In Your Own Time 1 Review and develop your reading on the topic (initial refs given with the workshop), including the reading on methods as listed for the workshop 2 Collect data from a student sample outside the MN3295 course using either questionnaire designed at the workshop (minimum 20 student respondents) or your sample’s own photos (minimum 10 student respondents) 3 Analyse the data using either simple statistics for the questionnaire (e.g. frequency tables and graphs as taught in Year 1) or simple thematic analysis for the pictures (e.g. as discussed at the workshop and example given in the workshop reading Slutskaya et al (2012) ‘Lessons from photoelicitation: encouraging working men to speak’. Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management, 7, 16-33) 4 Write up the report of no more or less than 3K words according to this structure: • Literature review (1000 words) covering attitudes and organizational commitment concept See references in handbook • Method (500 words) covering sample (who took part), method and procedure of data collection (how you obtained the data) See references in handbook 3 • Analysis (750 words) covering results of data collection , for example, frequencies of responses to questionnaire items, presentation of photos and recurring themes across them • Conclusion (250 words) covering main points of results and practical implications • Critical Evaluation (500 words) covering reflection on experience (what you learnt from exercise) • Appendix (not included in word count) including references and, for example, measures, pictures etc Students’ Experiences of Social Media
