The Debate Between W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington.
Two great leaders of the black community in the late 19th and 20th century were W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. However, they sharply disagreed on strategies for black social and economic progress. Their opposing philosophies can be found in much of today’s discussions over how to end class and racial injustice, what is the role of black leadership, and what do the ‘haves’ owe the ‘have-nots’ in the black community. Your objective is to write is a critical analysis essay. Students will summarize sources from the textbook, online, and other forms of media to properly interpret and explain the Du Bois and Washington debate by using examples. Consider the materials from your book and the lecture. After some research, take a position in your essay and explain who had the best plan? How does it expand the interpretation of the period? Has its meaning changed over time? Does it have a lasting influence today? If there is a way to approach your topic from the position of your major, you are welcome to do so, although it is not necessary. Nonetheless, contextualize your responses and answer all questions. Your paper must be typed. The font should be 12” Times New Roman no more than a 2-3-page response paper.
