1. Identify one out of the three levels of poverty {transitional, residual or marginal poor} and discuss how it relates to your selected social problem. (Immigration) 2. Identify the social problem and what population it affects. 3. Based on research, {use your scholarly articles, books, journals, etc, for this section} discuss thing like… • Why is the selected topic an important social problem? For example, why should people know about it? • History of the social problem. For example, when did it begin? When did it become a problem? • Is there a local agency, especially in the Rio Grande Valley or in the state that provides services for this type of social problem? • Provide statistics and facts by using the scholarly articles, books or journals. {cite your work) For example, include data on how many people are currently affected by the problem at this point in time and compare it to 5-10 years ago, etc. Interesting facts about the problem. For example, what factors put people at risk, etc? 4. Select one theory and one subcategory from chapter 8 and discuss how the theory is aligned and has impact on the social problem you selected. Select only one from the section a, b, or c. Theories: {Page 251-267}. a. Poverty as a Result of Individual Characteristics which include subcategories of Genetic Inferiority, Poverty as a result of Psychological problems and The Human Capital Approach. • For example, If you choose Poverty as a Result of Individual Characteristics {theory} select subcategory either; Genetic Inferiority, Poverty as a result of Psychological problems or The Human Capital Approach and connect how it relates to the selected social problem. b. Cultural Explanations of Poverty which include subcategories, culture of poverty, cultural deprivation and blaming the victim. c. Structural explanations-Liberal Version which include subcategory-, which include, Poverty as a Vicious Cycle. 5. Create a potential solution for this social problem • Address things like… • Create a potential solution to help prevent or improve the selected social problem and how could it be done? • Who has the power to change this social problem? For example, name a state representative, a local board member, city official, etc. • What creative ways could be used to create awareness of the problem?
