Unique Religious Worship Observation Experience Assignment Purpose The purpose of this assignment is to increase students’ understanding and appreciation of religious movements different than what they have typically experienced. Students will attend a worship experience substantially different than what has been part of their background. Attending a Unique Religious Worship Experience Students will identify a religious group that is holding a worship experience and attend that time of worship Identify a Unique Worship Experience The worship service or event must be unique to the student. Make Observations During the Service Respectfully and appropriately take notes during the worship service so that you can answer the questions that are required for the written assignment. Writing the Essay For each Unique Religious Worship Experience Assignment, you will write a separate essay. Please do not write one essay about both experiences! Write one separate paper for # 1, and another paper for # 2. 1. Give a basic historical/theological background of the religious movement you are visiting. Tell about the history of the movement. Share its origins. Who are the people that started it and why? What are the names and roles of important historical figures in its development? What broader religious movements did it come out of? What are its theological or spiritual distinctives? Be sure to use and cite scholarly sources for this. One of these can be the textbook. 2. Describe the worship experience. What role did professional clergy play, if any? What role did laypeople, or volunteers play in the worship? What were the elements of worship used, such as preaching or a sermon, prayers, responsive readings, instrumental music, singing, chanting, walking, bowing, etc. How were these woven together? What was the pace of the service like? Slow and ponderous? Energetic and fast? How was time used in general? What was the mood of the people in the service? 3. Describe your response to the experience. How did you feel when you first went to the place of worship? What kind of response did you receive from the regular worshippers? Did they ignore you, or welcome you warmly? Did they act disinterested in you? How did you feel about their treatment of you? How did you feel during the time of worship? What surprised you? How was this different than what you had previously experienced? Did anything change in your thinking about this religious group after experiencing a time of worship? 4. Meet the following requirements for your essay a. Write a paper that is at least 6 pages in length, not counting the title and reference page. b. Use either APA or MLA formatting consistently throughout the essay. Include in-text citations and reference page citations. Properly format headers, page numbers, margins, etc. Use 12 point font, Times New Roman or Arial, double spacing. c. Use at least 5 scholarly, academic sources in your essay. One of these can be the course textbook. Cite them properly both in-text as well as on the reference page. Be sure that these are sources written by qualified scholars in this field. Do not use Wikipedia! d. Write an original essay! Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students who plagiarize will receive a 0 for a grade without an opportunity to re-post the essay. Please use your institution’s resources to help you avoid plagiarism. Quotes must be kept very short. Paraphrases are preferred to quotes. Both quotes and paraphrases must be cited both in-text as well as on the reference page. All claims that are not common knowledge must be supported by sources.
