Interpersonal Communication Theory Application
Overview: Using an interpersonal communication theory discussed in class, write a brief analysis in which you:
Summarize the theory
Apply the theory to a ‘Yea! life” communication interaction/situation or to scenes in a film (include a YouTube link)
Provide a conclusion that reflects on the theory, e.g. how useful was the theory in examining the communication interaction/situation
Paper objectives: Writing this paper will allow you to: • Demonstrate your understanding of an interpersonal communication theory • Demonstrate your ability to apply the theory to an interpersonal communication situation/event/phenomenon; and finally • Demonstrate your ability to assess a theory’s usefulness
Theories: Choose one from among the following theories: • Social penetration theory • Uncertainty reduction theory • Relational dialectics theory • Social Exchange theory
NOTE: The use of first person singular/plural is perfectly acceptable when you are sharing your personal story and applying the theory to it. The theory summary, however, will make the most sense in the third person.
