Virtual Ethnography Research Data Management Plan.
Please see the attached research proposal template and instructions before placing your bid. INSTRUCTIONS: This assignment asks you to apply best practices of ethical research and data management by planning a hypothetical virtual ethnography project on Reddit users. It is your choice which subreddit you select for the proposed research. However make sure that the subreddit selection aligns with the research question you provide. (Check out Duke’s guide for good research questions). E.g., why is it important and relevant to focus the proposed ethnography on this forum group and its users? How does this advance your ethnographic research question(s)? More detailed responses will likely illustrate more thorough use and application of key points from the course, more thorough planning and critical insight into potential challenges of the proposed project. This assignment requires some digging into multiple sources and some creativity in proposing a future project on Reddit users. A reminder that the ethnography shouldn’t be conducted for this assignment – this is a plan for future work! Important Resources: In order to provide detailed responses, the data management plan should draw on, apply and cite relevant elements from: ● What makes a good research question? ● The Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (See Ch. 1, Part B on Core Principles, also your notes from week 8), ● Ethics discussions (Ch. 4, and Prof. Brady’s guest lecture Oct. 28), ● The importance of data management (Prof. Lauriault’s lecture on Oct. 1, and Corti et al., 2012 – see your week 4 notes) ● Information on intellectual property on Reddit (Valerie Critchley’s workshop on Nov. 5 – on privacy and users’ rights on Reddit, and Reddit’s user agreement) ● Virtual Ethnography readings: Pertierra’s “Ethnography in the digital age” (2017) and Sugiura, Wiles & Pope (2017) “Ethical challenges in online research: Public/private perceptions” (week 9 readings and notes)
