What was the United States’ most important achievement in the period between 1865 and 1945?.
First, think about the question and how you might answer it. You want to make an argument, not simply summarize material from the course. Short history essays such as this can often be written using a simple formula. You should have a thesis (providing the argument and direction for your essay) in the first or second paragraph. Follow that with three examples developing that thesis in subsequent paragraphs. The conclusion should do more than restate your thesis. Explain to the reader why this argument/issue is important. Be sure to read over your paper before you submit it.
The Questions: Again, Answer ONLY ONE:
1. What was the most significant challenge facing the United States in the period between 1865 and 1945? How did American leaders and the nation’s citizens deal with it (if they did)? What solutions or remedies were attempted, and were these successful or not? What was the lasting importance of this challenge?
(The first answer some of you may think of is World War II. But do YOU really think that it was the MOST significant challenge? If not, then write about what you think was!)
2. What was the United States’ most important achievement in the period between 1865 and 1945? Was this achievement a benefit or advantage to most citizens, and why or why not? What was the lasting significance of this achievement?
