Assignment: • Post a 300-word response to the question down. Your answers must use an academic tone, be evidence-based and supported by relevant literature. • Using Harvard referencing. Please note that referencing is not included in the word count. • All materials required for reading are attached. Discussion 1 – External Analysis In this discussion, you are going to examine a case study of the King Faisal Hospital and Research Centre (KFH&RC) in Saudi Arabia. You are asked to consider the case study critically, specifically looking at the external issues that Ginter et al. (2013:36-38) identified as (i) economic, (ii) technological, (iii) political/legal, (iv) social/cultural, or (v) competitive situation. Step 1 – Read the following case study carefully: Case study: Walley, P. (2017) Case Study Strategic planning at King Faisal Hospital and Research Centre Saudi Arabia. In Johnson, G., Whittington, R., Scholes, K., Angwin, D., & Regne?r, P. (Ed). Exploring strategy: text and cases. Pearson (Intl): 729-733. (Please find the case study attached). Step 2 – Read the case study again and categorise all the external issues by their main theme of (i) economic, (ii) technological, (iii) political/legal, (iv) social/cultural, or (v) competitive situation. Note that some external issues may belong in more than one category. Step 3 – Imagine that you are hired as a strategic consultant by the management team of KFH&RC to help the organisation with their future strategic planning. Thinking about what you know from the case study and what you have learnt about external analysis in Unit 4; critically discuss the KFH&RC external analysis process as outlined in the case study. Throughout your discussions you are also required to address the following questions: • What were the strengths and weaknesses of their external analysis? • What tools and techniques would you recommend for them to use to improve their external analysis in the future? Why? Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the key approaches, theories and concepts that inform strategic management. 2. Critically appraise different schools of thought to healthcare business practice and strategic management. 3. Critically explain and analyse a range of strategies linking theory to practice.
