Synthesis publish

What is Synthesis?

Synthesis means combining ideas from different sources in order to come to a conclusion or point. It’s impossible to write a good research paper without it. The good news is that we do it all the time. If you’ve ever made a connection between two readings (“Both authors suggest _________”), you’ve written a synthesis. If you’ve ever weighed various points of view before determining a course of action, you’ve synthesized.
Synthesis can involve a couple of sentences or an entire essay, but for this assignment, we are writing one well-developed paragraph.

Due Dates:
Rough publish: Monday, September 21 (11:59 P.M.)
Peer Review: Wednesday, September 23 (11:59 P.M.)
Final publish: Monday, September 28 (11:59 P.M.)
Requirements:
All publishs must be typed, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins on all sides. Use a standard font and add an MLA heading. You must also include a Works Cited page. You are required to turn in a publish and receive a peer or tutor review before I will grade the final publish.

To Prepare for This:

• Start by reading this information about relating different viewpoints: https://content.nroc.org/DevelopmentalEnglish/unit10/Foundations/relating-different-viewpoints.html
• Now closely read/watch and annotate the essays and videos looking for common themes, arguments, or angles. Ask yourself, “What is an idea, theme, or commonality that connects the sources to each other?”
• Consider using a synthesis matrix to plot out the ideas from the articles/videos. See an example of a matrix here: https://case.fiu.edu/writingcenter/online-resources/_assets/synthesis-matrix-2.pdf
• After analyzing the readings, determine your thesis/topic sentence concerning the idea, theme, or commonality that the articles/videos share. Remember that a thesis must have a topic and a comment. (Example of thesis: “Jonathan Haidt and Peter Brown both agree that the mind can deceive us but that there are methods to diminish the deception.”)
• Now determine how you can support your thesis/topic sentence with support and evidence from both articles/videos.
• Time to write the synthesis. As with the summary, you should use signal phrases to connect ideas. See “resources” in this module for synthesis sentence forms and information about signal phrases.

Organization

Because you are only writing one paragraph, the organization for this is pretty simple. You must begin the paragraph with your topic sentence/thesis statement. Then explain/support your connections.
Sample Outline:

Topic sentence/thesis
Connection #1
Support for Connection #1
Connection #2
Support Connection #2
Connection #3 (if relevant)
Support for Connection #3
The final sentence should reconnect to the thesis (reiterate the point you just proved)
Grading

I will consider the following when grading your synthesis:
Strength/originality of thesis/topic sentence
Grammar, style, formatting
Clarity
Use of support
