For this assignment, identify, discuss and justify what four key features that are complementary to each other you think are important for an effective leader that leads to creativity and innovation. Task Details/Description: A feature can be anything. It can be a trait, a behaviour, a skill etc. However, the onus is on the features being drawn from academic concepts/ theories as opposed to being from a layman’s perspective. You need to justify why the four features you choose would contribute to effective leadership by drawing on relevant leadership theory and research. Remember that there is no right answer. What I am looking for is how you critically argue your choices with empirical evidence (i.e. theory and research). The essay is empirically-driven in nature and adopts an evidence-based management perspective and so the use of empirical research and theory to select, discuss, and justify each feature is crucial in order to do well. You can use whatever models and theories you like from term 1 content and your related wider readings. Avoid using more than two features from a given theory or model in order to demonstrate breadth in your work. Do not describe the four key dimensions of transformational leadership, or choose mostly (personality) traits as your features. You want to try and provide a well-rounded perspective on the variety of complementary factors (i.e. features) that may constitute effective leadership. How to be critical: No comparing and contrast or engaging in exercising of pros and cons, it should be more sophisticated. Providing more in depth perspectives. Examples; transformation leadership leads to all these good things but how? Research theorist suggest this however other perspectives suggest this leading more toward this. Or this personality trait has been shown that lead to these good things however research shows is its not just the personality of the leader but also the personality composition of the team that he or she interacting with is also important. You should question your feature because no feature is perfect but don’t say the weakness of the feature in the essay. Tips: show linkages. Develop linkages between all four features or at least two of the features. Do this thorough the discussion of the features. Finding features that are complementary and you can show that they complementary through research because you considering how they can all exist together. Try and achieve a balance (e.g., don’t choose all traits) try to consider variety to different angle. Emphasis on journal articles that where we get very specific research and justify it. try to find complementary features so it easy to see linkage between them. And please make the linkage through the discussion not separate paragraph. Discuss the feature and then bring theory to support and then explain and then discuss the feature. For examples: Ethical leadership is only can be a feature not a theory, the theory to support it is (social learning theory)
