Comparison between Single Point Urban interchange (SPUI) and Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI).
In writing the thesis you will be using PTV Vissim software to simulate and compare the behavior of the two different interchanges, SPUI and DDI. Congestion and safety are the two main aspects in this study. Please focus on how others studied the congestion and the delay in those two interchanges. Mainly talk about them in a traffic engineering manner. How they differ from each other and the conventional diamond interchange or other interchanges. How others compared between them and other designs considering the design geometry, signal phases, number of lanes, and the main reason why each model differs from the other. Which one is more efficient and what are their pros and cons. How each design enhanced the safety, reduced the delay time, crashes …etc. look only at the vehicles movement and not considering the other road users (pedestrians and bicyclists). Please, use simple language , make it simple and easy to follow. Feel free to add additional resources but don’t forget the citation and the reference page. Use tables and graphs if needed to support the ideas. Thesis chapters’ format: 1- Introduction: – Introduction (about 3 pages) General information about the two interchanges (SPUI and DDI) in traffic engineering aspect. How they can enhance the traffic movement and safety. – Problem statement (about 1 page) State the purpose of the research explicitly and succinctly. The introduction should lead up to and provide support for the problem statement. – Objective of the study (1 or 2 paragraphs) Vissim simulation models will be used to compare the efficiency of the traffic flow between SPUI and DDI based on existing data during a peak hour. Comparing the two models and their results will show which one is better and if they will make any difference in the queue delay, queue length, vehicle delay, stop delay and the travel time. The optimum signal phasing where obtained from Synchro 10 software based on the pm peak hour data. This is a brief description of what you will do. 2- Literature Review (about 7 pages) This chapter reviews what has already been written in the field on the topic of the research. The literature cited should support the theoretical argument being made and demonstrate that the author has a grasp of the major ideas and findings that pertain to his or her topic. A literature review not only summarizes the knowledge of a particular area or field of study, it also evaluates what has been done, what still needs to be done and why all of this is important to the subject.
