Description Our textbook Literature and the Environment explores our place among other animals and in the world. It discusses our influence on the environment and its creatures and their influence on us. The authors in this anthology put: pen to paper to celebrate connections with plants and animals, to muse on the farmer’s relationship to the land, to report travels to distant frontiers where wilderness can still be found, to lament the loss of places and species dear to them, to ponder the culture and philosophical and economic roots of worsening crisis, and to praise some little corner of the earth where daily life still maintains contact with what is good, wild, and healthy. (Anderson, Slovic, O’Grady xxi) For this essay, explore man’s influence on the environment or the environment’s influence on man. For example, you might write about: how settlers changed the frontier with fields, shelter belts, railroads, towns; the debate about changing rivers’ natural courses; endangering species; or deforestation. You might also write about how the environment shapes us. For example: the land often determines our livelihoods, whether we become farmers, ranchers, loggers, or fishers; some studies reveal how our physical characteristics are determined by our environments; or, we learn to live with other dangerous creatures, such as: rattlesnakes, mountain lions, or alligators. Choose one relationship or example of influence, to research and discuss in your essay. We are all influenced by our environment, and we all influence our environment. Please use this assignment as an opportunity to explore this relationship, a connection that we may seldom really consider. For this essay, you will conduct and incorporate research into your work. In the process of conducting this research and composing your essay, you should learn and expand your knowledge of your chosen topic. “Research provides the primary way of exploring a subject. As the editors of a famous encyclopedia put it, without research, ‘no authoritative words could have been written, no scientific discoveries or inventions made, no theories of any value propounded.’” […] “Good research makes you a genuine expert. If you approach your research seriously, you may gradually become an expert […] And you will be able to add your knowledge to the educated conversations taking place all around you” (Lunsford 302). * This assignment invites you to explore that connection between man and his environment. You should also choose an area of focus within this topic that you feel your audience needs to be better informed. Perhaps by increasing knowledge of your topic, the world might become a kinder, better, safer, cleaner, or fairer place to live. Your essay may be persuasive or informative. Explain the environmental significance of your topic by clearly stating your thesis and defending it with concise arguments and credible sources. To begin this work, you must first select a topic—one that is researchable (that is, one you can investigate by consulting materials in Briggs Library or your local library, online or in person). You may write upon any topic you wish.
