Assignment Objectives: 1) Use the electronic research capabilities of the DU Library to examine the latest professional and academic research efforts in environmental economics. 2) Develop environmental, economic, and social valuations by applying benefit-cost and marginal analysis frameworks. 3) Work with economic models and apply concepts, such as: economic and social efficiency, the equimarginal principle, opportunity cost, and willingness to pay. 4) Evaluate decentralized, command and control, and incentive-based environmental policies using multiple economic criteria. 5) Consult and advise government officials, attorneys, public interest groups, managers, executives and other relevant decision-makers regarding the economic and social impacts of human projects on the environment.  Topic and subtopics for the discussion include the following: Chapter 5: The Economics of Environmental Quality General Model of Pollution Control Pollution Damages: The damage function, uncertainty and time Abatement Costs and Functions The Socially Efficient Level of Emissions Enforcement Costs The Equimarginal Principle Applied to Emissions Reductions Trade-offs and Politics A) You will research and present one representative article from academic or professional journals related to the topic. You should select the article from academic or professional journals that meets three or more of the following criteria: • the publication is peer reviewed • the publication is published/edited by a university or scholarly society • the publication is published/edited by a professional society or trade/industry organization • the author of the article is from a university, professional or scholarly society • the author has significant academic and professional qualifications • the publication reports research • the publication contains a bibliography and references other works • the publication is written by more than one author • the paper was presented at a conference, particularly an international conference.
