Assignment For this assignment, you will write a 3-5 page (exclusive of the works cited page and the visual itself) thesis-driven rhetorical analysis of a visual that is directed at a particular community. Working to examine the rhetorical effectiveness of the visual’s argument, you will need to show how this visual is meant to be interpreted by its targeted community. Furthermore, you will give a specific argument for how the argument succeeds (or how it does not). In support of your claim, plan to provide readers with support from the visual itself and detailed, thoughtful explanations. Examples of visual material: Memes Advertisements Art Websites Game design Graphic Novels Newspaper templates Commercials/Infomercials Please be sure to attach your visual, in some form, to the last page of your assignment. Purpose Your larger purpose in writing this essay is to analyze the author’s argument and to support a claim (essentially to make an argument of your own) regarding the overall success of that text in relation to the targeted audience of the visual. Keep in mind that your personal agreement or disagreement with the topic/text is not the focus of the assignment; instead, you should help readers understand how the rhetorical elements of the text work together and to what extent they are effective for the intended audience. Because community is a big part of this class and its theme, your analysis will need to specifically address community.
