Film Analysis : Memento by Christopher Nol.
Description Assignment Watch the assigned film Memento by Christopher Nolan, taking note of as much narrative and visual information as possible. Write a short paper (2-3 pages, typed, double-spaced) that analyzes how this information contributes to our understanding of the emotional conflicts and ideas explored in this film. In short, evaluate the film’s use of narrative strategies, mise en scene, cinematography and editing. Use the precise terminology provided by the textbook to describe what you see. This analysis should be developed and organized around this central thesis: The film Memento poses the idea that our memories make up our identity, and when we lose those memories we lose our identity. To articulate this thesis, consider how the movie employs the cinematic techniques we have covered this semester: narrative, mise en scéne, editing, photography, and sound. If you would like, you could focus your entire discussion on just one component of film art (e.g., cinematography). Do not attempt a shot by shot analysis, or you will have a 100-page paper! Instead, focus on the details from the film that best support the thesis. While watching the movie, take note of specific details that would support the thesis. When you review your notes, decide which details seem to play the most important role in the thesis. You will need to watch the movie at least 2 times to successfully complete this assignment.
