BLINK by Malcolm Gladwell).
Description To analyze the main concepts inherent in BLINK in whatever way is most meaningful to you. You might narrate a story, undertake a “social experienm, ent” and report on the results, or critique Malcolm Gladwell’s approach or conclusions. The only requirement is that you actively engage with the text by citing and analyzing specific passages. Suggestions: 1. Pretend you are a book reviewer, and write a critique of BLINK. What, essentially, is the book about? How does Gladwell build his arguements, using appeals to emotion or logical (pathos or logos)? Are there any strategies he used or conclusions reached that you as the reader did not find convincing? 2. You could write an interview with a mental health professional, police officer, emergency room doctor or nurse, or anyone else that may have unique knowledge or experience with the kind of dilemmas described in Gladwell’s book. 3. In Chap#4, Paul Van Riper states:”When we talk about analytic vs. intuitive decision making, nethier is good or bad. What is bad is if you use either of them in an inappropriate circumstance.” Respond to this statement. 4. On page 16-17, Gladwell postulates what would happen if we “took our instincts seriously”, suggesting that “we would end with a different and better world.” Discuss the possibility that the insights in BLINK could transform society.
