Should food manufacturers be required to label foods that have been genetically modified?
You recently received a call from your grandmother in California. Although you rarely see her, you never ignore her calls. After asking about how you are doing, your grandmother asks if you have heard of the new USDA rules to require the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMO)/ingredients in food by 2020. You recall that your grandma loves to keep track of federal regulations as a hobby, and you secretly hope this interest is not heritable. From previous conversations with your grandma, you recall that in California the public voted against GMO labels 2012. However, you realize that with a federal law, all manufacturers will be required to label products containing genetically modified foods if it’s implemented. Your grandma wants to join a protest movement on the issue but is confused by which side she should support. Grandma says that she is having trouble finding objective information on the topic and is unsure if GMO labeling is a good idea or not. Since you currently attend the finest land-grant university in the US, she assumes you will be able to provide an informed opinion on the matter. Wanting to refresh your knowledge on the subject of GMOs and, more importantly, the issue of labeling GM products, you ask if you can get back to her via email. She agrees to this suggestion but not without apprehension. She warns you that she is too old to read a rambling novel and requests that you provide the pertinent information along with your opinion in a concise manner.
