Book : The blue parakeet. scot mcknight zondervan 2008 The Blue Parakeet Notes Rather than writing a paper on this book, you will turn in detailed notes that will indicate that you read the assigned chapters. Your notes can be bullet-points or complete sentences. They can include detailed quotes or summaries of key points (with page numbers) of every assigned chapter. This portion of the assignments will be similar to your weekly reading summaries. You will produce a 1-2 page, single spaced paper in response to the specific prompts you will receive in class related to the assigned chapters. 50% of your grade will be your notes. 50% will be the thoughtfulness of your response to the prompts. You do not have to love these books, or even agree with them to get a good grade on this assignment. You DO need to interact with it in a thoughtful, respectful manner. Where you disagree, you need to explain your disagreement in a mature way, being fair to the author’s ideas. Failure to do so may result in your being required to redo the assignment or your receiving a failing grade. Here are the chapters I want you to read for this assignment. Chapters 2,3,4 and then choose 1 out of 12-13 and 1 out of 14-15. The first three I’ve chosen lay out many of the ways Christians DO read the Bible, and include his suggestions for how he thinks we should. Chapters 11-15 are his argument that women should be allowed to preach and lead in the church and that this is supported by the Bible. Chapters 12-13 are discussions of women that DID speak or lead in the Bible and chapters 14-15 are his responses to passages that have typically been read to say that women should NOT speak or lead. You are welcome to read this whole section if you want his whole argument, but you’re just required to read 2 out of here. You also don’t have to agree with him. Your grade is not impacted if you don’t. It WILL be negatively impacted if you disagree with him in a disrespectful, or poorly argued way. By poorly argued I mean, you can’t just say, “I think he doesn’t know what he is talking about so I don’t respect what he’s saying.” He’s one of America’s leading New Testament scholars so treat him as such, even if you hold a differing opinion. I want you to read portions of his argument because you attend a Christian college that believes women CAN preach and lead, and in fact, has women doing so. I think it’s good to get a sense of why GFU thinks that. I recognize that for some of you, GFU’s position is different from the churches you grew up in. BACK TO DETAILS: For all chapters, provide notes like you would for your weekly reading. For Chapter 2, answer, “Based upon your understanding of the chapter, do you think the church you grew up in reads the Bible with/through/or reads to retrieve? Explain your answer. Which of these three do you think is the best way to read the Bible. (if you didn’t grow up in any church, explain the three ways and say which you think is best) Write a substantial paragraph for this. For Chapter 3: Which of these shortcuts have you seen in your experience? Either in churches you’ve attended, or in your own reading of the Bible? What do you think of his argument that these are all problematic? (Again, write a substantial paragraph). Chapter 4: What do you think he means when he says the Bible is a wiki-story? How does this relate to my assertion that the Bible is a ‘library?’ What do you think of his argument that we should read the Bible as primarily a narrative or story? Chapters 12 or 13: What do you make of these biblical examples of women leading? How do they fit, or not, in how you’ve previously understood the “appropriate” role of women in the Church? If they do not fit, how do you think they push you to examine your previous view? Chapters 14-15: What do you think of his argument relating to the passages considered in this chapter? Do you find it convincing? Why or why not? Does it encourage you, bother you, confuse you? Why? To summarize: notes on about 60 pages of reading from 5 chapters. 5 meaty paragraphs dealing with questions related to the 5 chapters you read. _____________________________________________________________________________ P.S. : I’m not christian, I’m Muslim.
