You will read a primary source about women and gender in the French Revolution, which will enable you to draw from our class discussion about the French Revolution and how historians study women and gender. Marquis de Condrcet, “On the Admission of Women to the Rights of Citizenship” (1790: http://chnm.gmu.edu/revolution/exhibits/show/liberty–equality–fraternity/item/3049 you will want to begin by reading it closely. What argument is the author making? What events, protests, and ideas inspired the author? Who was the intended audience of the document? How does your document reflect (or even further) the radicalization of the French Revolution? What kinds of claims does the author make, and on whose behalf? What does the document tell us about how people claimed rights in the Revolutionary era, and what the stakes were connected to those claims?
