The New York Times Magazine.
The New York Times Magazine is planning to focus its next issue on the prevalence of stereotyping in American culture. The magazine has asked you to write an article based upon Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “The Myth of the Latin Woman” and Brent Staples’ “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space.” How has each writer encountered stereotyping? How has each reacted? What are the differences and similarities in their situations? What are your thoughts in relation to the ideas presented in Cofer and Staples’ pieces? Do you prefer one over the other? Why? In your response, please be sure to summarize both pieces. A clear thesis statement should appear at the end of your introduction. You will devote the remainder of the paper to developing this statement. Start each body paragraph with a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details. Be sure to reference material in the form of paraphrase and direct quotation with proper in-text citations. Finish your paper with a conclusion that reminds readers of your main points. Include a “Works Cited” page properly listing the sources cited in your paper.
