The Modernist period in literature and in the arts in general was one in which ambiguity and indeterminacy replace certainty and clarity. “Meaning” itself became a contested idea: perhaps there may be no meaning to the world, or, just as bad, infinite meanings. Think about this in terms of Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis.” If a friend were to ask you: “What does this story mean?”, how would you respond to him/her? Is there one meaning to the story, no meaning to the story, or are there a multiplicity – perhaps even an infinity – of meanings to the story?
