Sexuality as Represented in Athenian Vase Paintings
Paper details
1. Read over the texts from Aeschines (“Against Timarchus”) and Eva Keuls (“The Phallus and the Box”). 2. Now thoughtfully examine the Athenian vase paintings. Pay attention to body types, positions, ages, activities, and anything that you think is significant with respect to a profile of Athenian sexual ideals and attitudes. Consider that most of the images were on pottery meant to be seen only by men, in all-male social settings, and were intended to be sexually exciting. 3. Describe what you think these images tell us about the Athenian sexual regime (i.e. the composition of Athenian sexuality), and why. Formatting: Images may be referred to by their alphanumeric code in the captions; footnotes are not necessary. If you refer to Aeschines or Keuls, you must have a footnote.
