Art Paper (15%): When we go the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena we will be able to see the Branchini Madonna that is part of an early Netherlandish altarpiece or the Baptism of Christ painting, both by Giovanni di Paolo. You can choose the altar piece or another religious panel in the collection – but if you do not choose a piece by di Paolo make sure that you choose a piece by an artist that you can research a bit. The paper will be 8-10 pages (with your sketch of the image done at the museum) and have three sections. In the paper I will be looking for the following things: o SECTION 1 (Context): In this paper you will be required to pick a particular piecework of art from the exhibit and reflect on it. Provide some contextual information, describe the context of the painting you have selected. Give its name, where it was painted, and when it was painted. Did the painter also leave any writings that might help you in your understanding of the painting. o SECTION 2 (Painter): Demonstrate familiarity with the life and thought of the painter through citations of any primary sources from the same time period and at least 1 secondary work on the artist or the art of the period, which the painting comes from. o SECTION 3 (Reflection): The third portion of the paper should consist of the articulation of your experience of gazing and looking at this painting. What did the artist teach you about worship, yourself, your neighbor, or your God? How does the artist’s perspective help you see truth in a way you perhaps have not seen it before? You are required to spend at least 40 minutes in front of the art piece you choose. Bring a note pad to sketch the piece of art and to take notes of any thoughts you have while gazing. o You will turn in your sketch of the painting with the paper.
