In your individual assignment you will be asked to analyse the case study “Leading across cultures at Michelin”. Building on the case study and in a review of the literature critically discuss the role of culture in facilitating or hindering cross-cultural communication and the transfer of HR practices across countries. 3 MNCs need to decide on how to manage individuals across countries and subsidiaries. They also often have to deploy talent from HQ to subsidiaries (and vice-versa). Cultural differences are one of the factors that create communication barriers between people from different backgrounds and challenge MNC’s ability to transfer HR practices across countries. There are several approaches to exploring cultural differences in the literature. One such framework was developed by Hofstede and you can use it to discuss the importance of culture as a factor a) influencing MNC’s ability to transfer HR practices across countries and; b) influencing expatriates’ ability to effectively communicate and adjust to working in the host country.
