Communication skills and the fact

Consider the following Case Study Upon completing your Advanced Diploma of Justice you gain a position at the Victorian Department of Justice as a Graduate Officer in the Legal and Equity operations area. You have been at the DOJ for 18 months and your Supervisor and Manager are very impressed with your work ethic, your communication skills and the fact that you are considered to be a supportive team member. You are informed by management that you have been recommended for a Team Leader role at the DOJ. You are very excited about this prospect as it is going to mean a $16,000 pay rise and it is a terrific career opportunity for you. Last week you were working back late with a colleague (this particular colleague has become a close friend as you both studied together and have known each other for nearly five years). You walk in on a telephone conversation and hear that your colleague is talking about a client’s case over the phone. Your colleague mentions two names, an address and an alleged criminal charge. You are aware of the client that your colleague has mentioned and you also know that a local newspaper ran an article on the client yesterday. The article clearly contained ‘leaked confidential information’ that may jeopardise a current court matter. When your colleague sees you they quickly shut down their computer and cover some paperwork on their desk with a newspaper. You notice that they are taking a file home with them. Your colleague notices your suspicion and quickly changes the subject. On the train on the way home, they tell you that they are in quite a lot of debt and are desperately trying to save as much ‘money as possible’. The next morning there is an article about the client on the front cover of the newspaper describing the details that you heard your colleague disclose over the telephone. You must consider the following in your answer in at least 1,500 words. Your work must be typed, spellchecked, proofread and include appropriate APA referencing and meet the word count. You must use question and answer style format and your answer MUST address the following: a. Please identify and describe some of your own personal ethical values. (At least 3). Integrity – Loyalty – Fairness – b. Why do you think these ethical values will help you when working in the justice environment in the future? c. Describe what you believe has been the most significant influence on the development of your values? Sports d. How can you apply your own ethical framework to help and support the ethical behavior of your work colleagues? (Approximately 500 words) 1. Describe the ethical dilemma that you are faced with in terms of the values/behaviours and principles of the public sector (as discussed in class). 2. Describe the ALL the ways that you could deal with this situation (both ethical and unethical)? 3. Identify and describe the workplace documentation/guidelines and procedures that you could use to assist you with the decision making process. Consider the legal requirements and workplace expectations of public service employees in particular. 4. Describe what you would do in this situation as a step by step process to fulfil your ethical obligations as an employee in the justice field. (Approximately 1000 words)
